The time has come to retire my current laptop or drive over the feakin thing! I am done with it suffering BSOD's and uncommanded shutdowns and just plain slower than frozen molasses in February..... please help as I am not a Computer Tech in any way shape or form.
If anyone more computer savy than me could guide or direct me to a GOOD middle of the road laptop (not bottom of the line or top of he line) that I only use for personal use.... email, faceplant, videos, pictures, jeep forums, etc... I would appreciate any and all help in selecting the right laptop for my application so I can finally drive over this current POS.... seriously.
I just don't want to end up with another newer POS because of my inexperience with computers is all so again... help... anyone.
Thanks

Just some General tips, go for anything with more than the following:
4GB Memory - This is quickly becoming the minimum for anything New in the laptop world
320-500GB Hard Drive - Tons of room for your Jeep Pictures :)
DVD Burner is standard in anything of course
For CPU's you want to look for anything Intel (typically faster than AMD) and go for a "Core i5" processor. Nice, middle of the road, tons of power.
If you're looking at AMD, make sure to grab the Phenom II or Athalon II series. Stay away from the cheaper ones.
Everything these days will probably meet your requirements, but shoot a little higher end 500-700 dollar range to make sure you get a few years life out of it :)

In a recent torture test I recently watched on Processors, AMD's run way hotter than Intel Processors leading to a shorter life span. There are similar videos on youtube to be seen, The basic Idea was check the temp of the processor with a heat gun under load and under no load Core I5 won hands down as when it isn't doing anything or isn't doing much it throttles back instead of running balls out getting nowhere's all the time. Then they removed the heat sinks and and hit them with a Heat gun the AMD Athalon last 35 seconds before it literally melted down. Core I5 went for about 3 minutes. Food for thought I guess.

Good time to nab some good deals....back to school sales. Just bought one for the parents...a Toshiba with a 500GB hard drive, 4GB RAM, 15.6" wide screen...was on sale at staples for $349, and they were having an in-store promo, $100 off any in-stock laptop. None in Moncton but brought one from Saint John...was $249 plus tax.
I have a buddy at work who's THE master at finding deals, hidden promos, price errors......I have more stuff that I never knew I needed because of him. Got to the point that I came back from vacation and he told me about a GPS on for a crazy price. "Sale's over, but I knew you'd want one so I bought an extra one for you.."
I can tell him to keep an eye out if you haven't bought one yet.
Also, hit Costco....they have some good prices and sales..plus their warranty policies are a lot better than the other 'big box' stores.

Actually here's a nice deal
http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?webid=330205&AffixedCode=WW&cmSearchKeyword=as5742-6639
On sale for $449, but this Friday, Saturday and Sunday it's going down further to $399.
It might be more than you're looking for, for surfing, facebook and looking at Jeep-porn. :-)

If you can snag it for 399, thats a solid deal on a very decent laptop. Cover up the Acer sticker, it will run faster.
